Metal Tubes, White Mattresses:
Hygienic Life in Twentieth-Century Turkish Sanatoria

Metal Borular, Beyaz Şilteler: Yirminci Yüzyılda Türkiye Sanatoryumlarında Hijyenik Yaşam

(with Deniz Avcı)

in Toplumsal Tarih no. 381, September 2025.

This essay explores how sanatoria in twentieth century Turkey functioned as more than medical institutions. They became stages where hygiene ideals, architectural design, and social norms intertwined, shaping both patient experience and public health imaginaries. Focusing on examples from Büyükada, Heybeliada, and Keçiören, it traces how spatial arrangements, from white metal beds to aseptic interiors, translated medical knowledge into material form. These spaces carried layered meanings, at once promising care and reflecting class distinctions, comfort, and estrangement.
